Our History

Clara Muhammad School of Queens is in a historic building that was originally purchased by the late El Hajj Malik Shabazz, better known as Malcolm X. Our brother Malcolm residence is located about 1.5 miles from the school in Corona East Elmhurst community and is being considered by the City of New York as a historical landmark. The name of our school was chosen in memory of Imam W.D. Mohammed's mother, who was a pioneer in recognizing the importance of an Islamic education.

The Clara Muhammad School is a privately owned nonprofit organization that has been in existence since 1980. Our curriculum fulfills New York State's mandatory guidelines and is licensed by New York University Board of Regents. We are also affiliated with the College Board and National Education Council of Clara Muhammad and W.D. Mohammed schools.

In September of 1980, we began with students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. After the second year there was a tremendous need to expand. Therefore, we added a grade each year. Our high school was added in 1991.

Clara Muhammad School is an Islamic base Institution with grades kindergarten through 12th grade and a four-year college preparatory curriculum. Our school is Guided by the Qur’an, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Taqwa and the commentary of Imam W.D. Mohammed. With our diverse staff and student body, we aim to create an Islamic atmosphere in which students are stimulated and nurtured by professional, caring faculty and staff, consistent with our Islamic roots, which recognized the importance of moral, ethical, and educational values.

At Clara Muhammad School, we strive to inculcate in our students, self confidence and understanding one's own heritage, as well as an awareness cultures of others, and formulating a sense of one's role in this technological age, with emphasis placed on reaching the total child. Our school admits all staff and students regardless of race, ethnicity, gender; and religion, 9% of our students are not Muslim.

Furthermore, we provide an environment in which students can fulfill their physical, social, cultural, spiritual, and other personal needs, along with developing responsibilities for leadership, to ensure the integrity and stability of the school status and the perpetuation of its rich legacy.

Clara Muhammad School has a firm resolve to maintain the human resources to be a school designated for greatness, as we strive for excellence in all students, faculty, staff and administration. Our students' yearly graduation rate is 99% of them entering a 4-year college or university, in which 75% of our students go on to graduate school. Alhamdulillah!
